We wanted to keep this interface as simple as possible, only using the user’s location as their primary input. This opens up to the Home screen, containing an interactive map of the user’s surrounding radius from their current location. Location markers can the be seen on the map, marking different types of outreach and enrichment events within their community. The color denotes different categories and frequencies of the events, and users are able to Search other areas or events with the bar above. After completing a certain number of events and taking on tasks for them, their status will be promoted to a Leader. This system addressed our initial issue of mobilizing youth leaders by empowering them to take initiative in a streamlined, structured way that was accessible to them and their community goals. Creating an Event allows users to directly publish the details, goals, and requirements of a potential event. They can add other team members to help out, or send out an invite. Extra positions will be made available in the form of location markers on other users’ maps. We wanted to keep this section consolidated to correspond with the simple format of the app (and the simplicity of its user’s objective: make an impact in the community). Therefore, we kept many functionalities housed within the same navigation page. As pictured in the above flow, selecting an upcoming event within the dashboard would allow the user to view their fellow team members’ profiles and roles, the tasks to complete and their timeframe within a visualized timeline, and any linked resources which they may find helpful from others involved in the event. In many ways, Unite acts as a project management tool for community activism as it enables users to track and create progress within the Unite platform. An initial Onboarding would inform the user of how their personal sustainability preferences and purchasing habits would guide their app experience. The generated Home Screen would have different elements based on these inputs to allow the user to peruse products and brands ideal to them, or articles on topics of interest. Thus, we played with dynamic triadic color schemes for the younger age group while leaning towards more subtle, neutral tones as per the serious nature of the app content. A split-complementary color scheme was used to create contrast between different atoms/molecules and place emphasis. This fully explains the product purpose and functionality as the user can learn about sustainable characteristics through the products they scan or the items they search. Corresponding sketches/graphics were used to both visually supplement the text for each screen as well as enhancing the overall aesthetic of the application. The pie chart visual is interactive and the user can select a slice to see the details in an overlay, as seen on the rightmost screens. The current solutions and platforms available also pose their own issues; Maizepages, the current extracurricular platform, is quite outdated, not mobile-friendly, and generates too many results to filter through. Social media for some clubs is not centralized and varies club to club; there is no consolidated social media platform for all. Sometimes, there is not even a way of telling if an organization is still in existence or accepts a certain genre of students. And more recently, many students are returning to campus after a long period of isolation during the onset of COVID-19; with this, a large portion of the U-M student body is looking to get re-involved on campus and should be able to use an adequate platform to do so. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f694b4b135b8a7b6b564284/2f2da9e5-f9a0-40c3-8104-0fa281788783/problem+statement+%282%29.png Maizefndr Once the main goals and objectives of the issue were defined, a potential tool was proposed that could address each objective. This application is to be used by three types of people – U-M students/general members, faculty advisors, or club administrators. These students could be from any background, demographic, and nationality, and it is preferred they are either within walking distance to campus or possess access to transportation if located further. These users should also own a smartphone and be fairly familiar with social media formatting. As for the social aspects of the system, it falls under the individual/group category. The user’s own set preferences would be individual, but the organizations and events themselves all group-oriented, allowing that individual to connect with others. The main question to be addressed came from the goals defined earlier, and the criteria was defined by performing user research and conducting interviews. I wanted these personas to provide a holistic overview of the user that could inform their potential journey and interactions within the product, accounting for their unique characteristics and goals. For this project, I utilized Jackson’s persona (pictured above) as the use case for Maizefndr. Each of these break into components, or features (purple) that allow the user to achieve that concept’s goal. The last level of this hierarchy are the functions (blue) that the features will provide within the application. From a design perspective, we could approach the concepts as organisms, the features as molecules, and the functions as atoms or UI elements. The comment section allows individuals to comment, reply to comments, and upvote (like) or downvote (dislike) comments. Once a user is registered, they can view their personal clubs in their home feed simply by using the “My Clubs” slider. The social impact of this project is to challenge U-M students to step out of their comfort zone and explore different categories in their extracurricular pursuits, to make communication easy on a single platform. Students should no longer be hesitant to consider organizations because they are unsure what the people are like, if they are qualified, or if the club is even still in existence. These were all valid concerns shared during the User Research process, the hope is that Maizefindr can lessen some of those worries. But what makes this app really stand out, its “wow” factor, is that it is consolidated. No other tool found during the competitive analysis combined all of these functions, and instead chose to specialize in a few. A recurring issue within clubs is that so many different channels are used for different things; a formal/informal registration process, announcements over social medias, group chat platforms. This is a tool which contains all, but the interface is not overly complicated, and is in fact, a familiar one. The Home feed and Search tool are modeled after Instagram, the comment section after Reddit – users will not have to waste any time becoming acquainted with the product and instead accelerate towards their goal of exploring organizations, joining club communities, organizing their extracurricular calendar. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f694b4b135b8a7b6b564284/f88f7ff2-ed81-4597-85ff-ec75e2bfde0e/challenges_opps.png Maizefndr This platform is quite feasible technology-wise; smartphone application technology and a decent amount of information input/backend work will be required and take a lot of effort, but the actual implementation/interface should not be difficult once that is complete. That being said, the tech and resources already exist for this project’s implementation, the manpower is all that is left. Clubs will have to input their information, roster, and registration processes, and keep these updated or their page will be removed. There is a need, therefore, for moderators on the platform. learning app In creating a functional UI for an Augmented Reality learning app, the implementation of simple and comprehensive icons was required. The buttons were modified and implemented into the AR environment displayed below. The Knowledge Cosmos re-imagines research exploration through an interactive, 3D visualization platform that treats science not as a static repository, but as a navigable universe. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was designed and developed to understand the COVID-19 virus through an environmental lens by analyzing big data regarding case logistics and environmental considerations. Difficulties encountered included collecting and cleaning relevant data, and accounting for confounding factors due to lack of isolating environmental effects. Various phases of user testing, such as creating personas, a heuristic evaluation, and brainstorming methods were utilized to form various iterations of this design.
